Poem On Your Blog Day

Eh why not…. Just found out about this idea for posting about a favorite poem on your blog today as the last day of National Poetry Month.

One of my favorites has always been “Sheep In Fog” by Sylvia Plath:

The hills step off into whiteness.
People or stars
Regard me sadly, I disappoint them.
The train leaves a line of breath.
O slow
Horse the color of rust,
Hooves, dolorous bells—-
All morning the
Morning has been blackening,
A flower left out.
My bones hold a stillness, the far
Fields melt my heart.
They threaten
To let me through to a heaven
Starless and fatherless, a dark water.

It’s not very long. This poem has always resonanted with me on a personal level, however I can see that it may not be everyone’s cup of tea 🙂 I love the images and ideas throughout – “rust” horse, blackening morning, stars, flower, bones….

I’ve got a copy of this poem on my Neurotic Poets web site, along with Plath’s biography, if you’re interested in reading more.
