He entered, vociferating oaths dreadful to hear; and caught me in the act of
stowi’ng his son away in the kitchen cupboard. Hareton was impressed with a
wholesome terror of encountering either his wi-ld beast’s fondness or his
madman’s rage; for in one he ran a chance of being squeezed and kissed to
death, and in the other of being flung into the fire, or dashed against the
wall; and the poor thing remained perfectly quiet wherever I chose to put
him.

... The homeless who take part in the program will have their own phone number and a way to keep in touch with potential employers, case managers, family and others.
"We're confronting Denver's homelessness problem at every turn. Having a simple phone number, something most of us take for granted, can be the key to survival and self-sufficiency for people in crisis or transition. ...."

n.
1. A rigid military disciplinarian.
2. One who demands absolute adherence to forms and rules.
So called from an officer of that name in the French army under Louis XIV. Cf. Martin the bird, Martlet.] In military language, a strict disciplinarian; in general, one who lays stress on a rigid adherence to the details of discipline, or to forms and fixed methods. [Hence, the word is commonly employed in a depreciatory sense.]

In our world today, all of us are stuck to our folk inflection of the elementary idea, but all we have to do to have a world culture is to turn our folk into a metaphor for the elementary, to realize the universal humanity in your folk tradition, which isn't peculiar just to you.
